Counting does not need a worksheet. Short games with familiar objects give children a reason to use number words, match one number to one object, and talk about what they notice.

Count as you move

Count steps on a short walk, jumps in a dance, or blocks as you build. Stop while it is still fun and let your child choose what to count next.

Set the table together

Ask how many people are eating and invite your child to place one napkin or spoon for each person. Use the moment to talk about ‘enough,’ ‘one more,’ or ‘one less.’

Sort and count toys

Make small groups by type or color, then count each group together. For young preschoolers, a few objects are plenty; accuracy grows with practice.

Make a number story

Use toys to act out a tiny story: two animals are playing, then one joins. Ask your child to show what happened rather than requiring a written equation.

Look for numbers in your day

Notice house numbers, calendar dates, or numbers on a bus. Invite your child to spot a familiar numeral without turning the outing into a quiz.
